how to host a trail day
Hosting an Epic Experience Trail Day is one of the best ways to bring that "Camp Magic" back home. As an alum, you know better than anyone that the connection doesn’t have to end at the trailhead in Colorado.
Here is an easy, step-by-step guide to hosting a Trail Day in your own backyard.
Phase 1: The "Campfire" Brainstorm
You don’t need to plan an extravagant expedition. The goal is connection. Think about what made your camp experience special and try to replicate that feeling.
- Pick an Activity: Keep it accessible! Popular ideas include:
- A gentle hike or walk at a local state park.
- Kayaking or paddleboarding at a nearby lake.
- A casual picnic or "Campfire" meetup at a public park.
- Location Matters: Choose somewhere with plenty of parking, restrooms, and a "Plan B" (like a nearby coffee shop) in case of bad weather.
Phase 2: Logistics & Outreach
Once you have a rough idea, it’s time to make it official.
- Set the Date: Weekends usually work best. Aim for a 3–4 hour window.
- Connect with HQ: Reach out to the Epic Experience team (chrisc@epicexperience.org or denny@epicexperience.org) . They can often help by:
- Sending out an email to other alumni in your zip code.
- Providing digital flyers or social media assets
- Spread the Word: Post in the Alumni Facebook group and reach out to your contacts directly.
- Keep it Free (or Low Cost): Try to choose public spaces where the only "cost" is a parking fee.
- Inclusivity is Key: Make sure the trail or activity is "thriver-friendly" for those in active treatment or dealing with late effects.
- Don't Do It Alone: Ask a local friend or fellow alum to be your "Co-Lead." It’s more fun that way!
Phase 3: The Big Day
On the day of your event, your main job is to be the Chief Encourager.

Pro-Tip
